To me, it is also the time for sweet treats.
I know what you are going to say... We should all cut sugar out from our diet as it creates havoc on our bodies. Strips our bodies of vitamins and minerals, is linked to diabetes, obesity, and many other health issues.
I am trying to be conscious of what I eat and what I feed my family, but a diet of total exclusions, especially where children are concerned, just does not work.
There has to be a balance of nutritious, nutrient dense food whilst still allowing my family to enjoy the food I prepare and for my children to have treats like everyone else.
I am by no stretch immune to the pressures this brings and many times find myself struggling between healthy and nutritious choices versus convenience when life is just too busy.
But I try and do my best every single day and with every single meal. Some days are great and others are not so good, but being mindful of my efforts to consider what we put into our bodies and making a conscious choice has to be good enough.
One of the biggest challenges for me is sweet treats for my children. They love them, they want them and they so want them.
I try to teach them about sugar and preservatives and what it does to their body. And I try to teach them the importance of feeding and nourishing their body and brain.
That said children are children and if there is chocolate or a sweet in front of them; frankly they don't care.
So I try and have sweet treats around that are of nutritious value and that have no refined sugar.
If you follow my blog, you will have already noticed that I share a lot of sweet recipes. :)
The following recipe is very easy and you can adapt it to whatever you have to hand in terms of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.
I do not have a name for these little treasures, so that's what I am going to call them. Lol
'Little Treasures' Ingredients
400g 100% raw cocoa
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup honey (more if prefer it sweeter)
100g Macademia nuts and almonds roughly chopped
100g Sultanas
100g crystalized ginger
1 tblsp vanilla essence
Line a baking tray with cling film or use a silicon baking tray.
Melt cocoa and coconut oil in a double boiler or in a bowl over a pot of simmering water.
Remove from heat and stir in honey and vanilla essence.
Pour into your baking tray
Sprinkle the remaining ingredients onto the chocolate.
Place in fridge until hard.
Remove and cut/break into pieces.
Store in fridge
Enjoy and share!
I'd love to hear if you have made them...
