How to achieve your New Years Resolutions

94% of new years resolutions fail before the end of February. It is not so much a lack of willingness or ability to achieve them but more of a misunderstanding in how to create lasting change.

Most new years resolutions are set for a specific results or goals, such as - learning a new language/getting fit / eating healthy/ loosing weight etc.

There in lays the problem, as we don’t consider our intentions or resolutions.

Intentions are the reasons why we want to achieve a certain outcome. For example; wanting to feel well/ getting less out of breath could be the intention for wanting to get fit.
Being able to communicate with people in another country would be the intention for learning a new language.

Resolution means; a firm decision to do or not do something/ the quality of being determined.

Goals are not actions, they are an end result and therefore are very difficult to achieve unless made into actionable steps.

The importance is on actionable small steps that can be done no matter what.
For example, if you want to learn a new language - you commit to 10min of practice and learning everyday. Set a timer/use an app and make yourself accountable by telling your friends about what you are doing so that they can support you.
If you want to get fitter, perhaps you commit to going to the gym 3 times a week, or doing 25 press-ups a day. Make it small, sustainable and above all doable no matter what.

So the take away is:

Set your
Goal - I want to do/ be able to do X
Intention - Why do I want to do this/ What is the purpose of doing this
Resolution - take action, commit to small consistent actions and do it no matter what.

Be aware that you will face resistance along the path, and remember that your mind is really good at making up stories that play into creating comfort and not doing what you have committed to doing.

Your thoughts are the only thing you are up against and they are not something you need to listen to.

A million ways to Wellbeing

The importance of mental health has come to the forefront of our attention in recent years. Perhaps because we as a society struggle with the pace, pressures and stresses of modern everyday life.
However, I am often surprised at how many people I come across, that feel  mental health and wellbeing doesn’t need to be addressed unless there is a problem.
People seem to feel, that in order to take care of their mental health and wellbeing through the support of a professional, there has to be something wrong.
Although I can see how that could makes sense, we really don't have to wait for a problem, for life to fall apart, for life to become too much before we take action.

That would be like going to the gym only when you are in pain, overweight or the doctor told you to do so.
When it comes to physical health and wellbeing, we all try to keep moving and active, and try to exercise on a regular basis to maintain  health and wellbeing.
Yet, there seems to be a resistance in doing the same for our mental health and wellbeing. Wether that is due to stigma, a misunderstanding or a lack knowledge, it is entirely down to each and everyone of us to move past this resistance.
By the way, the resistance is entirely made up in our head, there is no real barrier to taking care of your mental health and wellbeing.

My point is that we need to shift our perception around mental wellbeing, and instead of talking about mental health and wellbeing, we need to spring into action and create mental health and wellbeing.

There are a million ways to create mental wellbeing:
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Gratitude and Affirmations
  • Coaching
  • Breathing Practices
  • Reading
  • Listening to music
  • Having a real conversation with a friend

The list goes on…and do feel free to add...But the point I am making is that  YOU have to spring into action, YOU have to create space for yourself in order to experience deep wellbeing.
Be it on your own, with a friend, with the support of a coach or any other wellbeing professional.
YOU need to do it.

And there is never a better time than right now.
Don't wait for Monday, the new year to start or until you feel like it.

(thats just another made-up story in your head)
Instead do it right now.

Onwards, upwards and with Love,

Kerstin
