If you have worked with me you know about the power of thought and the power of perception.
This most basic human function applies to all aspects of live and therefore also play’s out in the very current topic of gender equality and diversity.
Whilst I wholeheartedly support all the amazing work that is being done in this area, I can’t help but wonder if it would be valuable to look at it from another angle?
Read on if you are curious.
Currently we look at gender inequality with the eyes of separation. Male and female - them and us.
We can find many female leaders advocate the unique aspects a women brings to a business. This highlights the differences between male and female and increases separation.
It doesn’t bring people (genders) closer together.
If we look at gender inequality and its history we soon realise that it is a historical remnant based on misunderstanding.
Historically, a women took care of home and children.
Now, women have jobs, careers, homes and children.
Many women are still brought up with these gender stereotypical roles.
Those that aren’t, are mostly brought up with the understanding that women need to work harder, fight harder and do much more in order to achieve like a man.
Which is all based on the idea that women and men are different.
Now, I am perfectly aware that there is a difference, in sex, but the bottom line is that we are all people.
We all have strengths and weaknesses and a lot of ideas and beliefs around how things should or shouldn’t be.
We have labels and boxes for everyone and everything. And as long as we stay within the boundaries of those boxes, we continue to live and work within that limitation.
Think about it, the only thing that can stop you from achieving your full potential is your limiting beliefs about who you are and what you can and can’t do.
As long as we continue making gender equality an issue that has to be fought, it will prevail as an obstacle in peoples minds.
This keeps women and men on the offence, and in separation of us and them.
It doesn’t build bridges, understanding and real support; and it prevents everyone (man and women) from living and working to their full potential.
True and lasting change happens when we see the world differently.
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” - Wayne Dyer
What if we saw and experienced each other as people without labels?
What if we engaged with each person for who they are and what they bring to the table without labels?
